Why Apple, why?!

After one week spent playing around with my brand new iPhone 4S, I still can't figure out why so many features are missing from this beautiful smartphone.
  • I can't send pictures via bluetooth. My old Nokia could send pictures via bluetooth, my old Moto Razr could send pictures via bluetooth, my expensive - state of the art - brand new shiny iPhone can't. I'd like an explanation, please.
  • I can't choose the colours of my calendars. Maybe it's just me, but over the years I've familiarised with some specific colours associated to my calendars. Red is the colour of my personal calendar, green is the colour of my work calendar, blue is the study calendar, and so on. Unfortunately Apple decided that such a simple feature wasn't worth the effort, so they didn't include it on the iPhone. I'm now stuck with some random colours (violet? yellow?) picked by Job's developers.
  • Now, that's really annoying. Ok, I'm obsessed with calendars, but I'd love Sunday to be the first day of the week. I know, I grew up in Italy, I shouldn't care less, but I've had Sunday my first day of the week for the past 5 years. My diary (UK diary) still shows Sunday as the first day of the week, I can't understand why my iPhone shouldn't do the same. Looks like somebody in California had no idea on what the first of the day of week in England is.
  • Notifications. I'm still exploring this fascinating world, however I've found the notification setting system a little bit clumsy. I'm not sure it's all iPhone fault, sometimes notifications are pushed to the desktop correctly, sometimes not. Gmail notifications seem to be working just fine, FB and LinkedIn work at random. Some apps push their notifications on the dashboard, others simply can't, unless they're configured properly.
Still, I love my iPhone.

On the move, again

Goodbye Atos (Origin)! After 5 years spent half in Darlington and half in Nottingham, it's now time to move again. Early this week I handed over the first resignation letter of my life to my line manager: I'm leaving the company on Thu 17th of May, just in time to start my new adventure at Codehouse the week after.

"It seems like only yesterday when I arrived in Darlington...". No, this post won't go that way, I'm really not good at writing such dramatic lines! I've spent 5 great years in Atos and I'm sorry to leave, but I'm also very excited to move to London. I'll be working full time as project manager for a small company based in the City, a challenging position in a fantastic city - I couldn't ask for more.

Besides, this relocation is in line with my (very slow) migration towards the South. From Edinburgh to Darlington, then Nottingham, next stop London. I'll end up in Torino again, one day!

I would like to thank all the people who came across my life during these 5 years at Atos, starting from my colleagues in Faverdale, Beeston and those in India, all my friends in Darlington and Nottingham, and I can't forget the language conversation group - you've all been great!

Hacker releases Symantec source code

At last, after 5 years

There was a time when I was studying at the uni of Edinburgh. It was 2007, and in order to improve my life as a skint student, I decided to get a part-time job at some local pub. Moreover, jobs as bartender or receptionist are a good opportunity to crack on with a new language, without having to pay any money for it. I wasn't looking for anything fancy: a job to pay the rent and some random house parties, the same sort of job that most of my peers had. It didn't take me too long to find my way to the Citrus Club, where I worked as bartender for a year - probably the best job I've ever and will ever have.

Before landing to that position, I remember that I applied for other vacancies. One night I was out with some friends at the bowling alley, not too far from where I lived. We had a good night, laughing and drinking til late. When we were leaving the bowling centre, I noticed a job-ad at the entrance of the complex: "We urgently need to fill some positions - please leave all your details, we'll be in touch asap". Cool, I thought, here it is, that's my job.

Back in 2012. Last Friday I got a message on my voicemail from a lady who apparently has just received my application and would like to set up an interview at the World of Football (WoF from now on). No mention of what WoF was or what the position was about. The message was quickly followed by an email, which repeated pretty much the same story: "Following your recent application, WoF would like to organise an interview bla bla bla." I politely replied to the email, telling that they must be mistaken: I wasn't looking for any job, I haven't applied to any position recently, namely to a company called WoF. Still, I was curious to understand what this WoF was all about.

Their second email clarified all my doubts. WoF was a bowling centre based in Edinburgh and, according to the manager, I handed my application not long ago. Suddenly, all started coming back to me: the night at the bowling, me and my friends there, the application form. After 5 years, I managed to get an interview. I declined.

People out there waiting for a call back, don't lose hope - it might take 5 years.

Megaupload shut down is not the end of the world

A lot of people reacted to the closure of Megaupload as if the Maya prediction of the end of the world was finally fulfilled. Here are my 2 cents on the topic - nothing more, really, Megaupload shout down is not worth that much.

We all know what Megaupload was all about - if you don't, take a look here. Basically, Megauplad was a company that made money from file sharing. These money came from the website Premium Account fees, which used to allow users a better file sharing experience in exchange for $10 a month. According to the US DoJ, Megaupload was shut down in January because of "engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement". Kim Dotcom and his affiliates were making huge profits out of copyright-protected work sharing, investing their returns in dodgy activities all around the world. The US government sentence is not against some poor Samaritans who helped others enjoy the latest Rihanna hits or the last Sherlock Holmes movie, it is against some criminals engaging in illegal activities using illegal profits. We could argue whether copyrights are useful and valuable to the whole society nowadays, whether they should be abolished or encouraged, but that's not the point of this post.

For those of you who still need the latest Rihanna album and can't be bothered to spend a penny (I can't blame you), take a look at Torrent Pond, one of the best torrent search engine I've ever come across.
